Film description

Crystal Gazing portrays the difficulties of human relations in London’s 1980s economic depression. Next to films like Derek Jarman’s The Last of England (1987), Crystal Gazing is an accurate depiction of the consequences of Thatcherism. A bankrupt illustrator Neil and his friend Julian, (who is completing his PhD on Perrault’s Puss in Boots), are economically and psychologically worse off than the female protagonists: a musician Kim and photography analyst Vermilion. Industrial strikes, unemployment, but above all, alienation and desperation force Neil and Julian to make extreme choices. A faulty phone connections causes chaos and a pointless conversation between Neil and Kim, in which she appears ambivalent towards Neil's friend tragedy, make Crystal Gazing a surreal black comedy; one that contains self-irony and a synthesis of the directors’ thoughts on film language, psychoanalysis and social polemics. Complex in its narrative, it remains the least formalist of all Mulvey and Wollen’s films and its title is ironic, as the future predicted in the ball appears crystal clear but bleak.
