The Quay Brothers: Dormitory

24.07 - 28.08. 2010, BWA Design Galery, ul. Świdnicka 2-4 Wrocław, wernissage on 24 July 9 pm

(design: Olaf Brzeski, curator: Katarzyna Roj produced by: Marta Kubik)

After last year’s project by Guy Maddin and Jakub Szczęsny, the BWA Design Gallery presents another artistic cooperative. The iconic film directors, founders of marionette animation, and artists in focus of this year’s festival – the Quay Brothers show their Dormitorium, made together with the Polish sculptor from Wrocław – Olaf Brzeski. The artist was not selected randomly. Brzeski’s art is based on surreal visions becoming true on film tapes, in three-dimensional sculptures and spatial installations with fantastic commentaries. He designed the scenery of the gallery for presentation of 19 chests with decorations used at making the most famous films by the Quay Brothers, e.g. The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer inspired by the art of the excellent Czech director, a free adaptation of prose by Bruno Schulz – Street of Crocodiles, or This Unnameable Little Broom. The precisely made miniature worlds were the starting point for formal experiments in film. Dormitorium actually does look like a common bedroom. This is a dream-like land, a reserve of creatures from dreams, incomplete toys, dusted mechanisms which are revived in the films by the brothers Quay.

The Quay Brothers

Twins, born in 1947. They studied in Philadelphia and continued their education at the Royal College of Art in London, where in the 1970s they directed their first short films. In the 1980s, they made commercials (for Honeywell, Walkers Crisps, and Dulux Wood Protection), music videos (the most famous one - for Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer), and animations which made them popular – The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer, Street of Crocodiles. In 1995, their first feature film premiered: Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream That One Calls Human Life, winner of the Bronze Horse in Stockholm and the jury’s award at the Fantasporto festival. Another full-length live acting film by the brothers is The PianoTuner of EarthQuakes. Their art is inspired by literature, especially by prose by Bruno Schulz and lately -Stanisław Lem.
