NEW HORIZONS Studio at 10. ERA NEW HORIZONS IFF has finished

The programme of the Studio was created together with Sandy Lieberson, a renowned industry expert, Chairman of Film London and collaborator of the Berlinale Talent Campus. Sandy also acted as a speaker and consultant during the workshop. Other speakers were: producer Julie Baines (Dan Films), sales agent Tine Klint (LevelK) and Rik Vermeulen, Executive Director of the Transylvania IFF and adviser to IFFR.

The NEW HORIZONS Studio also hosted two masterclasses ran by established auteur directors who represent very different styles - the US director, Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation) and the Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Distant, Climates).

30 young Polish professionals from different areas of the industry - directors, producers, composers and screenwriters - were chosen to participate in the workshop. Among them was Marek Lechki, whose film Erratum won the Best Debut Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia this year; the director Maria Sadowska; the composer Adrian Konarski; and the cinematographer Piotr Niemyjski.

The NEW HORIZONS Studio was a new initiative aimed at young film professionals from Poland. Its goal was to provide young filmmakers the knowledge about the workings of the international film industry. During the three-day workshop the participants took part in sessions on pitching, international promotion, festival strategy and world film sales. All sessions were run by acclaimed foreign experts. The workshops also included working in groups on model film projects.

Both the organisers and the participants were very pleased with the Studio. The workshops allowed the filmmakers to gain knowledge that will help them to plan their careers consciously and will help Polish films to get into international festivals.

The winning pitch was Hungry - an adventure film set in the Middle Ages pitched by a group including Kasia Klimkiewicz, Aleksandra Więcka, Jacek Rembiś and Piotr Niemyjski. The project got rave reviews and some of the participants are already planning to go ahead with production.

The co-organiser of the NEW HORIZONS Studio was Media Desk Poland and its partners were Michael Ihlein and Gosia Dobrowolska.

The first edition of the NEW HORIZONS Studio will take place 26-29th July 2010.
