Films by Breillat and Honga Sang-soo at Venice's Horizons

La Belle Endormie (Sleeping Beauty) based on the novel by Charles Perrault, directed and written by Catherine Breillat, a French woman who is well-known to us, will start, and a film by the father of new Korean cinema Hong Sang-soo Oki's Movie will end the programme of the Horizons section at the forthcoming 67th IFF in Venice (1-11 September 2010). Recently, Hong won the Un Certain Regard competition in Cannes with his Hahaha. Labelled as provocative, Breillat is one of the most important, and in the New-Horizons' series, modern directors. Her Anatomy of Hell (2004) which we saw in the New Horizons competition at the 4th ENH, based on her novel Pornocratie, remains her biggest success. At the 9th ENH, we saw her film Bluebeard (2009).

Breillat played in Last Tango in Paris (1972). As a director, she made her debut with A Real Young Girl which made it onto screens only after 23 years. She wrote her first, iconoclastic novel L'homme facile when she was almost 17. She is not afraid of controversial scenes or non-self-evident themes. Her films have been shown at the largest festivals in the world. She lectures at film schools all over the world and is a professor at the Paris La Fémis.
